What is it about?

This book review examines Steven F. Hyatt’s Christ-Centered Education: Post-Critical Pedagogy and its contribution to educational philosophy. It explores Hyatt’s argument that education should move beyond critique alone toward a constructive vision grounded in Christ. The review considers how a Christ-centered understanding of reality can provide an ontological foundation for education, the transformation of the human person, and the work of teaching.

Why is it important?

Contemporary education is often dominated by critique—questioning assumptions, exposing injustice, and challenging existing structures—but critique alone cannot tell us what education is ultimately for. This review highlights Hyatt’s argument that post-critical pedagogy needs an ontological grounding: a foundation for understanding reality, truth, human purpose, and transformation. Christ-Centered Education offers that grounding in Christ, providing a constructive vision of education oriented toward truth, love, wisdom, responsibility, and human flourishing.

Perspectives

What drew me to Hyatt’s work is a question I believe education urgently needs to confront: What grounds education after critique? If education is dominated by critique without a coherent account of truth, reality, and human purpose, it risks becoming very good at dismantling without knowing what should be built in its place. I find Hyatt’s Christ-centered response significant because it locates the grounding of education not merely in another theory or method, but in Christ. For me, this review is an invitation to take seriously the possibility that educational transformation begins with uncovering the ontological question—what is ultimately real, true, and worthy of orienting our lives and our teaching.
