What is it about?
Most interpretations of the Obama-era attempt to give a civilian trial to 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed take a tragic tone. However, this essay argues that the attempt to give him a trial discombobulated the symbolic infrastructure of the war on terror.

Theorizes the importance of the need for the public to make claims in the name of the rule of law in the midst of democratic crisis. Particularly salient given the FBI investigation of Trump, where public law may be required for the polity's health.
