What is it about?
Neurodegenerative diseases encompass a wide range of chronic, progressive and disabling illnesses. Decades of research have shown that these conditions place a significant burden on both the person with the disease and their caregiving spouse, as well as on the couple's relationship. In this study, this body of research has been synthesised and analysed to provide a clear overview of how couples cope with neurodegenerative diseases.

Why is it important?
By shedding light on three major dimensions of the couple relationship disrupted by neurodegenerative diseases, this study allows us to better understand the challenges and the resources of couples facing these illnesses. Clinicians could use these findings to target specific mechanisms of couple functioning and provide more effective support.
Perspectives
This article represents over three years of dedicated work, providing us with a clear and detailed understanding of research on the experiences of couples facing various neurodegenerative diseases. It has also allowed us to identify numerous research directions and develop a series of clinical recommendations. I hope that this article will be valuable to the scientific community and to clinicians who work with these couples on a daily basis.
