What is it about?
This paper presents a systematic literature review aimed at identifying, evaluating, and categorizing the most effective countermeasures to prevent and mitigate Wrong Way Driving (WWD) on high-traffic roads. By evaluating 17 selected peer-reviewed publications from an initial pool of 505 documents, the study divides the solutions into three key domains: Simple Signals, Intelligent Technological Solutions (ITS), and Road Design. It provides a comprehensive analysis of their effectiveness, crash-reduction capabilities, and cost-benefit ratios, establishing a scientific foundation for transferring proven safety technologies to the European road network.

Why is it important?
Wrong Way Driving (WWD) represents a highly critical road safety issue because, despite being relatively rare, WWD crashes—particularly head-on collisions on divided highways—carry an extremely high fatality rate compared to other crash types. While the United States has pioneered research and extensively deployed advanced countermeasures, European countries have lagged behind in testing and adopting these technologies. This study is important because it bridges this gap by systematically evaluating the safety benefits of these systems and proposing a concrete pathway to adapt and deploy highly effective American technologies, such as Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, to fit European road standards and signage.
Perspectives
Driving the wrong way on a highway is a rare event, but when it happens, it often results in devastating head-on crashes. To tackle this danger, researchers conducted a massive review of safety studies from around the world to find out what works best to stop wrong-way drivers. The study found that while traditional road signs help, the most powerful tool is smart technology. Specifically, "smart" signs equipped with rapid-flashing lights that only turn on when they detect a vehicle heading the wrong way are incredibly successful, helping up to 85% of drivers realize their mistake and turn around safely. Because European roads use different signs than American ones, the authors designed a new hybrid sign specifically for Europe, combining a standard "Do Not Enter" sign on a bright yellow background with these highly effective flashing lights to save lives on European highways.
