What is it about?

We explored the motivation and willingness of expatriates in the civil engineering industry, when considering employment opportunities in Qatar. We focused on self-initiated expatriates (SIEs), known as those who chose to find an overseas employment opportunity and relocate rather than being sent abroad by their existing employers.

Why is it important?

As more organizations expand into the global market place, there is an increase in the need for globally mobile workers. While we understand some of the reasons that motivate expatriates to work internationally, it is not very clear how important the destination is to expatriates.

Perspectives

Qatar provided a very interesting setting for this study as it is one of the most expatriate-reliant nations in the world. Having won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup has only increased the need for foreign workers as the country's construction industry continues to boom.
