What is it about?
Many dress and fashion history books in Sweden were imported, translated and transnational co-publications, from for example Denmark, Italy, Czech republic. The dress history is a type of publication has its roots within precious volumes, journalism, illustrated press and academia. The article gives an overview of the field and explores the hybrid quality of dress and fashion history publications, with a particular focus on the visual illustrations.

Why is it important?
The general dress history publication has had a huge impact on a general readership within the field, but has often been neglected by academic studies. This article shows that they actually reflect the main tendencies within cultural theory of the period: structuralism, semiotics and history materialism. This is one of the few studies on the historiography of fashion history.
