As pet owners increasingly turn to artificial intelligence tools instead of search engines or books, a study evaluated how accurately two leading AI chatbots—OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro—answer care questions for one of the most popular pet reptiles, the leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius). Researcher tested both models across 21 questions covering biology, habitat requirements, feeding, and medical issues.

Why is it important?
AI chatbots can serve as a quick, convenient starting point when researching pet care. However, to get the best advice, pet owners should ask questions individually rather than pasting long lists of questions at once. Because AI answers can still omit key context, owners should always cross-reference AI-generated advice with established care guides and consult a qualified exotic veterinarian for health concerns.
Perspectives
Testing cutting-edge models like ChatGPT-4o and Gemini 2.5 Pro against real-world husbandry questions highlighted both the incredible capabilities and the clear limitations of modern AI. It was exciting to see how accurately these tools handle baseline factual knowledge, but the study also reinforced that AI cannot replace veterinary oversight or experienced human keepers. My hope is that this work sparks constructive dialogue between technology developers and exotic animal professionals to make AI-driven pet care guidance safer, more detailed, and more reliable.
