What is it about?

Natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods can disrupt supply of woody biomass to bioenergy plants. We examined the potential effect in the eastern US based on declared Presidential Disasters, a conservative estimate of the frequency and severity of natural disasters.

Why is it important?

Renewable energy such as biomass is expected to be a big part of meeting future energy demand. Plants located to convert woody biomass to bioenergy need to account for the potential disruption in supply caused by natural disasters. To date, risk from disasters has not been accounted for in national plans.
