What is it about?
Floods can cause substantial damage. An important problem to solve for design is the simultaneous occurrence of extremes in nearby catchments. Jointly occurring extreme floods can cause very high damages downstream from their possible confluence.

Why is it important?
Often, designers do not allow for the simultaneous (or nearly so) occurrence of floods in two rivers flowing in nearby catchments. This paper introduces a new way of assessing the risk of regional flooding and provides a novel solution.
Perspectives
This is a brand new approach to flood frequency analysis. The combination of copulas for inter-connection of contiguous river data and Fourier frequency analysis to parse out the significant underlying periodicities, is an exciting departure from standard analysis and I hope will 'take off'!
