This article discusses the art of Natalie Bookchin, which uniquely depicts “the public”. Through analyses of Bookchin’s artworks, I argue for a revised understanding of the public in economic and political terms.

Perspectives

The term “public” is used widely and often interchangeably with other catch-all words such as “people” and “community”. However, the concept articulates a specific set of economic and cultural conditions. These have not only changed over time, but they need recognising now as a means to navigate contemporary culture.
