Why is it important?

To look at safe and effective alternatives in giving women choice and autonomy regarding decisions on postmature pregnancies.

Perspectives

With a huge increase in the amount of women being offered induction of labour for postmaturity, I hope this article helps to clarify the safety and effectiveness of an alternative intervention which helps to promote spontaneous labour, and therefore reduce the number of women being offered a formal induction of labour. Within my own Trust, women are now made an offer of a membrane sweep at 38 weeks pregnant onwards.
