A meta-analysis of the effectiveness and safety of membrane sweeping to promote labour, and prevent the need to consider induction of labour for postmaturity.

Why is it important?
To look at safe and effective alternatives in giving women choice and autonomy regarding decisions on postmature pregnancies.
Perspectives
With a huge increase in the amount of women being offered induction of labour for postmaturity, I hope this article helps to clarify the safety and effectiveness of an alternative intervention which helps to promote spontaneous labour, and therefore reduce the number of women being offered a formal induction of labour. Within my own Trust, women are now made an offer of a membrane sweep at 38 weeks pregnant onwards.
