What is it about?
Of all the German U-boats which successfully ran the perilous Gibraltar Straits into the Mediterranean during WW2 none (or at most one) ever got out again. The big Italian boats, on the other hand, frequently made the same trip in both directions to access their operating base at Bordeaux. This was despite their poorer manoeuvrability and diving performance. What was the difference?

Why is it important?
Both British and German sources tended to discount Italian effectiveness. This note adds to the growing body of evidence that in some areas, at least, their skills and dedication were a match for anyone.
Perspectives
The note is based on prisoner-of-war evidence which I believe will lead to many more interesting insights.
