What is it about?
Lightweight portable neutron survey meter of only 2 kg was developed containing a mixed gas of methane gas and nitrogen gas without using polyethylene moderator. The energy response of this survey meter was evaluated with the mono-energetic neutron reference fields and continuous energy neutron reference fields together with the PHITS Monte Carlo calculation.

Why is it important?
Lightweight portable neutron survey meter is only 2 kg, by comparing with conventional moderated-type survey meters of heavier than 8 kg. This servey meter is easy-handling and has good energy response over wide energy range from thermal energy up to about 300 MeV energy neutrons in work place neutron fields.
Perspectives
This lightweight neutron survey meter is very easyhandling compared with conventional heavier ones and also has good energy response to get ambient neutron dose equivalent with good accuracy within about 25 % in actual workplace neutron fields. I hope that this commercially available survey meter, NSN3 by Fujielectric Co., will be widely used in nuclear and accelerator facilities.
