What is it about?

This study evaluated a questionnaire designed to measure how demanding an entire day feels, including both work and non-work activities. The findings also support a brief version of the questionnaire for measuring day-to-day changes in mental strain across the whole day.

Why is it important?

Most workload measures focus only on work tasks, even though responsibilities outside of work also contribute to how demanding a day feels. A valid measure of whole-day workload may help researchers and clinicians better understand how daily demands influence health and quality of life.

Perspectives

For my dissertation I searched for a measure of workload for the whole day, not one focused on work time only or only on a specific task. I experienced for myself and heard from many parents that non-work demands had a big impact on well-being. I could not find a whole day workload measure though, so I tried adapting the popular NASA-TLX, was lucky enough to have it administered in a study, examined its validity, and this is the result.
