This paper critically interrogates, challenges and resists some of the dominant conceptualisations and practices associated with improving teaching and learning enshrined in current higher education policy, with a particular focus on the United Kingdom. In doing so, it offers a reimagined, alternative perspective driven by professional responsibility rather than managerialist accountability. It is of importance and relevance to anyone who is interested in the scholarship of learning and teaching in higher education.
