What is it about?
Many policy documents seem to assume that all parents are the same, and that all parents in poverty face the same issues. Further, parents are often blamed for things that are actually systemic issues. THis article challenges some of the assumpts we make about parents, and challenges what we can do to improve things for all of our children and families.

Why is it important?
This article brings a critical eye to many of the assumptions that underlie not only policy documents but a great deal of work in schools.
Perspectives
I see my work, including this article, as a part of an overall drive toward social justice; this article reflects on some of the underlying discourses and assumptions which can get in the way of achieving those ends, even when we work with the best of intentions.
