What is it about?

We have examined the specific challenges experienced by a traditional academic librarian at Griffith University as she moved into a new role as a data librarian. We look at some strategies to facilitate this type of role transition.

Why is it important?

Regardless of what new skills staff need to acquire to support them in a new role, important contributors to their success include a well-constructed skills development programme, a mentor/coach and a support network of specialists.

Perspectives

As authors, we hope that the article is particularly useful because it draws on the first-hand experiences of an academic librarian who found herself in the "deep end" of transitioning to a new and demanding role.
