What is it about?
This book tells the story of English in Kuwait: how it arrived, how people use it today, and what they think about it. Drawing on a large corpus of spoken and written language, it explores how English is developing local features and how its use connects with people’s identities. It also shows what Kuwait’s experience can teach us about English worldwide.

Why is it important?
This is the first book-length study of English in Kuwait, bringing a country often overlooked in research into the broader story of English around the world. Based on about 128 million words of spoken and written language, it shows how local uses and identities shape English. It provides a foundation for future research in Kuwait and the Gulf and helps broaden our understanding of how English develops in different societies.
Perspectives
As a Kuwaiti researcher, writing this book gave me the opportunity to explore the place of English in the society I am part of. I hope the book encourages researchers/readers to take an interest in a setting that has received little attention and gives other researchers a foundation to build on.
