What is it about?

Languages often show variation between alternative patterns and constructions. This book brings together eleven studies into the emergence, variation, and function of different patterns in English as well as other languages. Most of the studies examine authentic data from large electronic corpora.

Why is it important?

The book contributes to the study of variation and change in the use of linguistic constructions, and comments on the data and methologies used in the research in the field. In addition to exploring variation in some of the main regional varieties of English, the studies expand the scope of research into the varieties of English spoken around the world as well as into patterns of complementation found in other languages.

Perspectives

Compiling the chapters of this book from different contributors was a pleasant task as we wanted in this way to honour Professor Juhani Rudanko and recognise his substantial work in the field of complementation. The book covers a broad spectrum of studies in this field in terms of the theoretical and empirical approaches employed.
