What is it about?

It investigated the impact of a study-abroad experience in Australia on the changes of motivation to study English among three Japanese university students. It also examined if their Motivational L2 Selves (Dörnyei, 2009) developed.

Why is it important?

Each three participant's perception of environmental and contextual factors were carefully examined by three interviews conducted before, during and towards the ned of the study program. The same environmental factors could influence motivation either positively or negatively depending on the learner's personal traits as well as their cultural and educational backgrounds.

Perspectives

I enjoyed much about conversing with the participants who expressed honestly how they perceived their own learning experiences in the program where they studied with peer learners from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. All the differences they experienced in and out of the classroom seem to affect them in a complex way.
