What is it about?

The article seeks to explain the birth of the scientific discourse. For so doing, it focuses on the case of two legendary animals, which were said to live in Greenland, a land hardly known during the first half of the 17th century. Hence, the article analyses how 17th century travel accounts spoke about the unknown, while trying to make a distinction between myth and fact.
