What is it about?
This study explores the feasibility of utilizing a freely available automatic speech recognition tool, Google Voice Typing (GVT), to evaluate English as a second language pronunciation in placement tests. We conducted a comparative analysis of 56 pronunciation tests, evaluating scores assigned by both human raters and GVT. Our findings reveal a robust correlation between scores provided by human raters and those generated by GVT.

Why is it important?
Automating the assessment of pronunciation in placement tests through speech recognition technology offers a promising solution, given its demonstrated comparability to human raters in reliability. However, the implementation of such technology often involves significant costs for development and maintenance, which may be prohibitive for many institutions. Leveraging free speech technology like GVT has the potential to enhance the utility and accuracy of language placement tests, offering a cost-effective alternative for institutions seeking reliable assessment solutions.
Perspectives
While this study is about placement tests, I hope that this technology will also start to be used for classroom assessments as well.
