What is it about?

This article examines the similarities and differences between how Islamic State and Al Qaeda describe "the West" in their online magazines. This helps us to better understand how their propaganda creates an in-group and an out-group, and how the propaganda presses readers to decide which of these groups they identify with.

Why is it important?

A better understanding of the propaganda of jihadist groups offers an insight into the radicalisation process, and also helps practitioners tasked with countering violent extremist messages.

Perspectives
