Perspectives

This volume is relevant for three main reasons. First, this volume presents a summary of the research findings on L2 motivation theories from the past six decades that have witnessed the development of motivation studies, from the earliest social psychological stage to the current social dynamic stage (Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2011). Second, this volume not only advocates the quantitative approach of L2 motivation research, but also proposes qualitative and mixed-method approaches to enrich and complement prior research. Third, this volume combines the virtues of a reference work with those of a guidebook and applies some related L2 learning motivation theories to concrete practice. The combination of theory and practice in this volume contributes to expanding its readership. Experts as well as novice researchers of L2 motivation will benefit from this arrangement, as the former have a deep understanding of L2 motivation but can learn about new areas, and the latter can attain insight on the topic. As a comprehensive and practical conclusion of current L2 motivation research, this volume will guide researchers to further probe into L2 motivation.
