What is it about?

Language users sometimes use a negation where one would not expect this. The paper studies the use of extra negation in Dutch and looks into the factors which trigger it. It is claimed that the negation cannot be seen as a language error but must be seen as part of the grammar.

Why is it important?

The study into the use of extra negation is important because it brings insight into how natural language and its grammar differ from logic. The conclusions of the research show that communicative factors can lead to the use of extra negation to facilitate language production and processing.

Perspectives

This article is part of a series of other articles I have written about seemingly illogical language. Many people are unaware that they use such language, and when pointed out to them often reject such language as incorrect. I hope that after reading my paper they will start thinking differently about it and realize that language is full of illogical patterns.
