What is it about?
Bone is constantly being built and renewed, but it has been difficult to see this process inside the body. Using advanced nanoscale imaging, we tracked how bone-building cells use dietary nutrients to make new bone and showed that this activity declines with ageing.

Why is it important?
This approach gives us a new way to see how bone is built and renewed inside the body. By revealing how bone-forming cells use nutrients and how this process changes with ageing, the study may help us better understand bone loss and develop new approaches to protect bone health.
Perspectives
I am particularly excited about this work because it allows us to see, at very high resolution, how bone-building cells use nutrients and turn them into new bone inside the body. For me, one of the most striking findings was how quickly this happens, within minutes to hours, and how clearly this activity is affected by ageing. I believe this approach opens up new opportunities to study bone health and disease in ways that were not previously possible.
