What is it about?

We built flexible robotic metamaterials by chaining together simple robots into a beam. These active beams amplify waves in one direction only, enabling stable oscillations and programmable movement: Our mechatronic beams crawl, dig, and walk, all without a central brain.

Why is it important?

Because these robotic metamaterials operate without a central controller they are robust, multifunctional and scalable, with applications anywhere robots must function in damaging, uncertain environments-from squeezing down a pipe to deep space navigation.
