What is it about?

Actomyosin pulsatile contractility is an important mechanism driving tissue morphogenesis, but the mechanism underlying F-actin pulses is unknown. This paper unraveled a conserved mechanism controlling F-actin pulses in tissue morphogenesis and collective cell migration.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that F-actin pulses are controlled by a coordinated action of two actin nucleators and one turnover regulator. Importantly, this actin turnover regulator can function as either activator or inhibitor, depending on its relative concentration. It thus proposes an unconventional mechanism interpreting F-actin pulsation formation.

Perspectives

We hope that this article will bring new thinking about the origin and control of pulsatile F-actin networks, which is critical for a lot of biological processes. This controlling mechanism might be present in other tissue morphogenesis and cell migration processes. Or it will provide some important cues to similar cytoskeleton pulsatile behaviours.
