What is it about?

The structure and function of Nsp2, one of the proteins synthesized by the corona virus, were not known. We used novel experimental and computational tools to model this structure. We observed that Nsp2 has at least three sites where it can bind zinc. We therefore propose that it has a role of regulating the zinc levels inside the infected cells. The same approach also helped us to build a more complete model of the Nucleocapsid protein.

Why is it important?

Atomic models of viral proteins are a requisite for devising therapeutic strategies to interfere with them. Our new models will provide the basis for such future works.

Perspectives

Our new approach will be suitable to study many additional proteins inside cells.
