What is it about?

We present a very simple model that describe the behavior of the Earth's magnetic field. We use two coupled particles (much like two balls tied with a spring) moving in a double-well potential (like a W-shaped slide) and affected by random fluctuations (or tiny vibrations). We analyse this configuration and describe how the same kind of asymmetric behavior observed on the Earth's magnetic field can arise when one particle is heavier than the other one.

Why is it important?

The magnetic field of the Earth is generated in the core region, but it is still not fully understood. Although complex models of the core processes exist nowadays, they present technical dificulties and are hard to analyse. Simple models including only few key elements can help to identify the main processes involved in the caracteristic features of the magnetic field generation.
