What is it about?

This study established methods for characterizing sebaceous glands and generated tool mice that specifically target sebaceous glands in vivo. It elucidates the origin and biological features of sebaceous glands. The responsiveness of sebaceous glands to ambient temperature, diet, and topical epidermal treatments, along with reversible state transitions of sebaceous gland stem cell descendants, confers important theoretical significance and translational value for the treatment of sebaceous gland disorders.

Why is it important?

This study advances our knowledge about the biology of canonical and non-canonical sebaceous glands. The established sebaceous gland isolation method and the sebaceous gland-specific mouse models established in this study will serve as valuable tools for future SG research.

Perspectives

I hope this study will raise awareness of the importance of sebaceous glands. These glands contribute to far more than cutaneous health. Atypical sebaceous glands such as the meibomian glands are also critical for our health. We anticipate this study will open a new chapter for sebaceous gland research.
