What is it about?
Many migratory birds fly in V-shaped formations because it helps them conserve energy, but exactly how this works has remained an open question. We developed a mathematical model that accurately predicts the best position and wing movements for a trailing bird, revealing how it uses the air currents generated by the bird ahead to reduce the effort of flight by about 11%.

Why is it important?
This work helps explain one of the longstanding mysteries of animal behavior: how birds save energy by flying together in formation. By providing a simple but accurate framework for studying these aerodynamic interactions, it lays the groundwork for understanding collective flight across species and could inspire more energy-efficient designs for coordinated aircraft and drones.
