What is it about?

We examine the direct and spillover effect of reminder nudges in a complex environment. We observe that nudges have negative spillover effects, which persist even after the removal of the reminder nudge, while the positive direct effect on targeted behavior diminishes.

Our results highlight the importance of considering the spillover effects of nudges, both immediately and after the withdrawal of the nudge: Considering also the spillover effects could change the conclusions about the effectiveness of nudges.
