What is it about?

Ketone bodies are molecular intermediates in energy metabolism and signaling molecules. Ketone bodies and their role in health and disease have attracted significant attention from the public and scientific community. We found that caloric restriction, a dietary intervention that improves metabolism and longevity, induced high amplitude circadian rhythms in blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (ketone body) and these rhythms are tightly controlled by the circadian clock.

Why is it important?

Dietary interventions that increase blood ketone bodies, such as various versions of fat-reach keto diets or fasting-based diets, are growing in popularity. Ketone bodies might have both positive and negative impact on health depending on the level and duration of the exposure.

Perspectives

If tightly controlled circadian rhythms in ketogenesis provide better health and longevity benefits compared with chronic elevation of ketone bodies by ketogenic diet is open question.
