What is it about?

RNA is an important type of biomolecules in the cell nucleus, contributing to ordered gene expression. We show that the previously unknown nuclear RNA PIRAT contributes to misguided immune gene expression in blood cells from patients with severe COVID-19.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the less PIRAT RNA is produced, the more of immune-mediators promoting severe COVID-19 are generated. This suggests a negative relationship between the amount of PIRAT RNA produced in human immune cells and severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Perspectives

We believe that artificial manipulation of the expression of PIRAT could interfere with severe disease progression, not only during COVID-19, but also in the context of other infectious diseases.
