Ever wondered if glycoproteoform heterogeneity varies between genotypes and oligomeric states of Haptoglobin? Our data show that it does, both in glycosylation and proteolytic processing, with implications for Hemoglobin scavenging

Why is it important?

Serum haptoglobin protein (Hp) scavenges toxic hemoglobin (Hb) leaked into the bloodstream from leaking erythrocytes. We show that each person has different variants (i.e. proteoforms) of Hp in their serum, and reveal how all these variants in oligomerization, glycosylation and processing influence its scavenging activity. Our data also show that haptoglobin can only be considered a viable biomarker when all its proteoforms are considered.


Our genomes are unique, but also our serum proteomes are unique/personalized. Improvements is personalized medicine diagnostics should thus also consider the proteoform profiles of important serum biomarkers
