What is it about?

Periodic structures (which band be represented using a unit cell) often have ranges of frequencies for which no wave propagates, termed band gaps. We create a structure which blocks an enhanced range of frequencies by using a changing unit cell size.

Why is it important?

Blocking vibration eliminates an important source of noise contamination in many applications. The ability to block vibration over a wide frequency range using a mechanically robust structure aids efforts to integrate vibration isolation in demanding vibration environments.

Perspectives

This publication demonstrates the performance of a fairly rough example of a phononic pseudocrystal isolator; it was nevertheless able to demonstrate some of the potential performance of these designs. I am hopeful that future research and development will provide more refined examples of this family of vibration isolators, and apply them in the service of problems for which they are uniquely well-suited.
