What is it about?
By cross-examining time-resolved optical spectroscopy and electron diffraction results, we are able to follow the laser-induced carrier and structural dynamics of black phosphorus (bP) and find the 5 temporal regimes for its behavior.

Why is it important?
We describe a coherent picture for bP's multi-stage dynamical responses, which provides insights into the fate of photoinjected carriers and the significance of electronic-lattice coupling at early times, especially along the layer-stacking direction. The new understanding sheds light on the anisotropy of bP's photodynamics.
Perspectives
It was satisfying when we found quantitative agreement between data acquired by very different experimental methods and gained new understanding that has not been reported by the many previous reports.
