What is it about?

Experimental composite materials became one of the research needed for developing the Indonesian national aircraft program. Mechanical joints must be reduced to save the aircraft's weight. One of the surface treatments for the composite joint is abrasive treatment. In this work, the effect of abrasive treatment on the single-lap shear joint has been done to investigate the strength of the E-Glass Composite. Composite specimens were treated with 100-grit sandpaper and 400-gritsandpaper. The strength of the single-lap shear joint was assessed and compared by the result of tensile testing and atomic force microscope observation. The result shows that abrasive treatment with a rougher grit yields a better shear strength of a lap joint, owing to a rougher treated surface and better adhesive absorption on the surface.

Why is it important?

It is important to know the best sandpaper grit size for composite joints.

Perspectives

Adhesive joints are an important joint type in composite structures and abrasive treatment is very important to improve their performance.
