What is it about?
Low-temperature thermochemical treatment (typically 400°C–475°C) produces a hard, corrosion-resistant S-phase layer (expanded austenite) on ASTM F138 (316LVM) stainless steel. Temperatures below 450 to 475 are critical to prevent chromium nitride/carbide precipitation, which would otherwise reduce corrosion resistance, ensuring high surface hardness, fatigue resistance, and biocompatibility.
