What is it about?

This paper summarizes the development of a THz energy meter designed to operate in the harsh radiation and EMP enviroment created by kJ class, ps laser pulses. The meter was shown to detect large THz pulses and survive the enviroment after several revisions.

Why is it important?

THz radiation is a unique portion of the spectrum that is difficult to generate and detect. Laser-plasma THz sources from kJ class lasers have been shown to be some of the strongest THz sources available, but detection of these THz pulses in this environment is very difficult. This paper outlines how to build a detector for this unique challenge.

Perspectives

This work was the cumulation of two years of work and hard earned lessons in how to not build a THz detector. I hope that future experimentalists read this paper and are able to learn from it and not have to repeat the same harsh lessons in handling EMP that we learned.
