What is it about?

The government supported construction projects especially in rural India are experiencing extensive delays and continuously increasing operational cost during the project. Due to a dramatic shift in the capacity and volume of the rural Indian constructions over the last decade, it has been observed that the performance of the Construction Supply Chain in rural India needs to be improved in various dimensions. Therefore, all government supported construction schemes in rural India is studied and analyzed in this current study. The identified critical factors which play a crucial role for efficient CSC are lack of local population involvement, poor planning, inadequate survey, natural disaster, proper maintenance, fund crisis, inefficient real time monitoring system, delay in payment, lack of commitment, inefficient site management, poor site coordination, improper planning, lack of clarity in project scope, lack of communication, and substandard contract. The use of various techniques such as preferred supplier status, analytical procurement model, 5S practice and performance measurement system is explored to develop a strategy for improved resource utilization.

Perspectives

This article was a pleasure to write because it has co-authors with whom I have had longstanding collaborations. Construction projects supported by the government, particularly in rural India, are experiencing extensive delays and continually increasing operational costs. The construction supply chain in rural India needs to be improved in various dimensions as a result of a dramatic shift in local capacity and volume in the last decade. And this article is unique in its area till date which shows the ground reality with particular research as well as future directions.
