What is it about?
Combining ferroelectricity and magnetism in single-phase materials has been a challenge. We have shown that certain chemical ordering breaks inversion symmetry in magnetic oxides that render them multiferroic properties.

Why is it important?
Chemical ordering not only induce electric polarization but, in many materials, it cannot be switched by the opposite poling electric field and thus remain pyroelectric.
Perspectives
I believe that this article stimulate to find new multiferroic materials based on chemical ordering.
