What is it about?

The RCSB PDB Molecule of the Month presents short accounts on selected molecules from the Protein Data Bank. Each installment includes an introduction to the structure and function of the molecule, a discussion of the relevance of the molecule to human health and welfare, and suggestions for how visitors might view these structures and access further details. This article describes the goals of the column, and a transition in authorship from David Goodsell to Janet Iwasa.

Why is it important?

The Molecule of Month offers an important tool for education and research. The shapes and functions of biological macromolecules highlighted in these articles help explain all aspects of biomedicine and agriculture, from protein synthesis to health and disease to biological energy. The series is offered free of charge at https://pdb101.rcsb.org.
