What is it about?

Superlumninescent LEDs are light sources which combine aspects of laser diode and LED performance. These blue light emitting SLEDs use 45 degree turning mirrors at either end of a waveguide to divert light downward through a transparent substrate. The result is a high power, directional light source with a broad smooth emission spectrum.

Why is it important?

Blue SLEDs combined LED and laser like characteristics mean have many potential applications as sources for displays, optical coherence tomography, LIDAR and visible light communication. This novel surface emitting approach could allow for less costly fabrication and testing of SLEDs while providing record high optical powers.
