What is it about?

This work helps to understand the role of local motions of water molecules at low temperatures when embedded in disordered condensed environments, such as bulk water, aqueous mixtures with carbohydrates, hydration layers of biomolecules. An universal behaviour is found toward a maximum mobility trend at low temperature.

Why is it important?

Two significant findings are: a) we provide a rational for the universal behaviour of water dynamics in aqueous environment, including the confined ones; b) we confirm that such a process is responbile for dynamic transition of hydrated globular proteins.

Perspectives

I hope that this paper could guide readers to consider the molecular mobility in aqueous systems in the more general framework of glassy dynamics. Water is the most anomalous liquid, maybe, but it is in any case a liquid. Frankly, I think that a promising perspective will be to deep the role of hydration layer in the dynamics of globular proteins.
