What is it about?

The manuscript reviews the recent progress in this field in the last 5 years and provides insights into how the technique may develop to remain relevant for future applications. In addition, we standardize terminology, review exciting literature and topics of interest, and clarify common pitfalls and mistakes in magnetic force microscopy measurements. This manuscript also serves as an introductory text for new users of magnetic force microscopy, and to inspire future developments.

Why is it important?

Imaging magnetization at the nanoscale is fundamental to develop and characterize magnetic nanostructures, which are part of electronic devices such as magnetic random access memory. Magnetic force microscopy allows for magnetic imaging at the nanoscale, with almost no sample preparation from its operation in ambient conditions. Hence magnetic force microscopy is a tool of massive importance for the nano- and microscale magnetism community.

Perspectives

Reviewing the progress done in the field is important to spread the knowledge among all the community. Writing a perspective is as important as reviewing, since it can guide and help new developments to happen. In the case of magnetic force microscopy, its integration with other imaging modes, along with the capability of providing quantitative measurements are two of the main developments of the years to come.
