What is it about?
Scientists develop a low-cost, large-area and tunable platform to detect trace amounts of hazardous molecules like explosives and pesticides. The platform increases the signal from the target molecules nearly 100 million-fold and may be a good candidate for a wide range of chemical sensing environments.

Why is it important?
We demonstrate a simple and straightforward self-assembly technique producing large-area benzenethiol-coated gold nanosphere films on non-templated substrates with SERS enhancements comparable to those produced with top-down approaches.
