What is it about?
Table Salt, NaCl exists as three dimensional solid. This solid is formed due to attractive interactions between the oppositely charged Na+ and Cl- ions. However, there also exists a repulsion between the cores of the ions which prevent them to come too close and eventually collapse. This works finds the origin of the balance between the repulsion and the attraction.

Why is it important?
Understanding the subtle balance between the attractive and the repulsive interactions can help in designing new smart materials.
