What is it about?
Tetrafluoroborate (BF4-) is a pseudohalogen ion with excellent passivation effects. By passivating the surface defects of perovskite nanocrystals with tetrafluoroborate, we successfully obtained perovskite nanocrystals with ultra-high stability against light, heat, and water.

Why is it important?
Perovskite nanocrystals exhibit excellent optical properties, but their light stability is currently the most critical bottleneck issue. However, we effectively addressed this problem by passivating the surface defects of nanocrystals with pseudohalogen ions (BF4-). Interestingly, BF4- in the passivation process without protonation of oleic acid and octylamine. Besides, BF4- could provide the largest hindrance to stabilize lattice compared with Br- and NO3-, leading to the better stability against light, heat, and water.
Perspectives
This work effectively addresses the bottleneck issue of light stability in perovskite nanocrystals and lays the foundation for the reutilization of ultra-stable nanocrystals, thereby promoting the perovskite nanocrystal for display industry closer to practical applications.
